Around NSW, 189 independently governed agricultural show societies are powered by more than 16,000 volunteers. These groups preserve rural culture, strengthen community spirit, and educate the public about agriculture’s essential role in Australia’s economy and identity. 

It was early morning when the first Scouts gathered for the tree planting day, pulling on gloves and organising shovels and seedlings. Soon, the space filled with young people, parents and volunteers working together, carefully planting each new tree.

Once per month, around fifteen volunteers arrive at Losh’s home in Western Sydney ready to chop, stir and package food. 

Down by the Bellinger River a group of volunteers gathers with nets, sample trays and testing kits in hand. Among them is Daisy Sully, carefully scanning the water’s surface, while nearby, Trish Reinten coordinates the group’s next steps.

When 53-year-old dad Josh Renshaw was made redundant, he wasn’t just looking for work, he was looking for a way to keep contributing to the community.

Every second month in Western Sydney, a small group gathers to talk, share lived experience and problem-solve. At the centre of it is Jayne Boardman.

It’s a typical Tuesday morning when a bright orange van pulls in next to a busy neighbourhood centre on the Central Coast. 

Community Greening is an outreach program of the Botanic Gardens that supports communities across NSW. 

Jay Flanagan grew up far from the coast and never imagined he would one day build his life around the sea. At 36, he now spends much of his time on the water or caring for the vessels that carry others across it.
