Your Annual Land and Stock Return (ALSR) helps Local Land Services (LLS) protect NSW’s primary industries from pests, diseases, and emergencies. It provides an important statewide snapshot of land use and livestock numbers as at 30 June each year.
Key dates for 2025

Your return will be sent to the address you have registered with LLS.
Monday 30 June - ALSR portal opens.
Sunday 31 August - Lodgement deadline (mailed forms must be received by this date).

How to log in to the ALSR portal
You'll find your holding reference number and password at the top right corner of your return.

How to complete the ALSR form
1. Gather and enter your livestock numbers
- All livestock over 6 months old (for example, cattle, sheep, goats, etc.).
- All pigs (any age).
- Poultry, where flocks exceed 100 birds.
If you have no livestock, tick ‘No’ at Question 1 and submit a Nil Return.
2. Record your land use details
This includes the hectares allocated to cropping, horticulture, native vegetation, etc.
3. Confirm your Property Identification Code (PIC)
Your ALSR will list the PIC(s) recorded as being allocated to your holding. If the details are incorrect, you can add the PIC(s) you are using. Find out more about Property Identification Codes.
4. Submit
Review and confirm that the details you have entered are correct. Then submit your online form, or sign and mail your paper form using the reply-paid envelope supplied.
Why is the ALSR important?
The farm census information you provide is invaluable and allows Local Land Services to:
- quickly and accurately respond to emergency or biosecurity events
- protect our ‘clean and green’ reputation against pests and diseases
- build a statewide picture of agricultural land use and livestock numbers
- monitor flocks and herds for emergency animal diseases
- help keep domestic and international markets open
- keep your property records current.
Who needs to lodge a return?
Lodging your annual return is a legal requirement if you:
- are an occupier of rateable land (even if you have no stock), or
- have a Property Identification Code allocated to your holding, or
- are the registered proprietor of a stock brand or earmark.
What happens if I don’t lodge my return?
- You may be charged additional livestock levies on your rates next year. LLS rates are calculated on your property’s Notional Carrying Capacity and size - not on ALSR livestock counts. However, if you do not complete your return by 31 August, additional livestock levies may apply.
- Your records may be outdated, affecting emergency responses.
More information about completing your return
If you are in the process of selling or leasing your land (including exchanging contracts) and are still the legal occupier on 30 June, you are responsible for the ALSR.
If you received the ALSR notice, you are responsible for lodging it.
A separate ALSR must be lodged for each of your holdings. By logging into the portal, multiple holdings within one region will be visible. The ALSR for each holding must be submitted separately, however you will only need to login once.
Do not lodge all your stock on one ALSR if they were not residing on one holding at 30 June.
Audits are carried out on ALSR so information lodged must be true and correct.
Please update via the change of contact details form or contact your local office 1300 795 299 for help:
- if your details are incorrect
- if you were not the occupier of all or part of the holding on 30 June.
Please note, if you are submitting your return manually, please do not mark changes to your details on the form as your ALSR is scanned electronically and any changes won’t be updated.
