Coolah - a great place to live
Situated close to the Warrumbungle's, Coolah (pop 800) is the gateway to the Coolah Tops National Park, where bushwalking, mountain biking and camping are popular activities.
Coolah Tops National Park is where the Warrumbungle and Liverpool ranges meet. There are trails for bushwalking and mountain biking in the park, as well as campsites, enchanting waterfalls and spectacular lookouts. Among the diverse wildlife are wallabies, gliders, kangaroos and eagles.
The town traces its heritage to the ‘black stump’, a reference to the limits of colonial settlement. The Australian colloquial saying ‘beyond the black stump’ – beyond European civilisation or deep in the outback - is closely associated with Coolah and has ties all the way back to Governor Darling’s 1826 limit on authorised settlement.
Coolah has a great tradition of sporting endeavours and is very active in a number of activities. Horse sports are popular throughout the district. The young (and young at heart) enjoy a variety of sports and there are more laid back activities to enjoy as well. You can get involved in bowls, golf, swimming, tennis, netball, all codes of football, athletics, cricket, yoga, dance and karate.
There’s also a range of activities and interest groups for music and theatre and arts and crafts at the gallery and library.
Coolah's shopping includes and IGA Supermarket, a well renowned bakery, a butcher and a number of specialty stores.
