Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on written examination
Part A
Students should:
- make notes in the Candidate’s Notes column and transcribe their answer on to the allocated lines
- respond in English
- use their own words and not translate segments of the text as part of their response
- refer to content and language if required by the question and give examples from the text to support their response
- address the key words in the question, for example ‘how’, ‘why’, ‘justify’, ‘analyse’ and provide relevant responses
- have a thorough knowledge of the prescribed themes and the related issues as well as the prescribed texts for study.
- understand what is meant by language techniques as part of the course.
In better responses, students were able to:
- respond in English and provide quotes in Indonesian as evidence
- provide a comprehensive response from both the parents’ side as well as the children’s side (Q1b)
- identify the speaker’s message and provide an explanation that consisted of both the content of the speech as well as the language techniques used (Q1c).
Areas for students to improve include:
- providing reasons from both the parents’ side and the children’s side (Q1b)
- referring to both the content and the language techniques used in the speech (Q1c).
Part B
Students should:
- respond in Indonesian as stipulated in the question
- use their own words and not translate segments of the text as part of their response
- demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the prescribed themes and the related issues raised in the texts
- support their response with appropriate examples and textual references
- ensure their response provides all the relevant information to fully answer the question
- manipulate the language authentically according to the context, audience and purpose of the question
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- adhere to the suggested number of words and/or characters.
- include features of a diary entry in their response for example their feelings and reflection.
In better responses, students were able to:
- use the information from both texts comprehensively in their response
- use language that is most suitable for a diary entry, ie colloquial
- include their feelings and reflection in their justification for their choice of a career path.
Areas for students to improve include:
- comparing and contrasting the information from the two texts in a logical and coherent manner
- using language that is most suitable for a diary entry.
Part A
Students should:
- respond in either English or Indonesian as required by the question
- address all parts of the question
- identify the key issue(s) and provide examples to substantiate the response when asked to analyse or evaluate information
- demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the prescribed texts, themes and prescribed issues
- use appropriate textual references to support their ideas and point(s) of view
- structure and sequence information and ideas in a coherent and logical manner
- have an excellent control of vocabulary and appropriate language structures
- avoid giving a literal translation of text(s) as part of the response
- use only the lines allocated for the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- refer to the language used in the extracts (Q3)
- demonstrate understanding of both prescribed texts (Q4)
- explain the relationship between humans and nature (Q3a)
- explain both the changes in the physical and sociocultural environments (Q3b)
- identify the writer’s message and analyse the language and literary techniques used (Q3c)
- discuss the statement as it relates to the prescribed texts (Q4)
- identify and analyse the correct language techniques used in the prescribed texts.
Areas for students to improve include:
- reading the question carefully and responding to all parts (Q3b)
- identifying the writer’s message and providing the analysis of the language and literary techniques used (Q3c)
- revising the difference between language and literary techniques (Q3c)
- demonstrating an understanding of the plots of the prescribed texts (Q4)
- using appropriate textual references to support their analysis of the prescribed texts
- revising literary techniques.
Part B
Students should:
- respond in Indonesian only
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- take a stance on the issue(s) raised in the text and substantiate a point of view with evidence from the text
- demonstrate understanding of whole text
- demonstrate an excellent control of vocabulary and appropriate language structures.
In better responses, students were able to demonstrate:
- a thorough understanding of the issue(s) raised in the text and respond accordingly
- an excellent control of vocabulary and appropriate language structures.
Areas for students to improve include:
- understanding the issue(s) raised in the text
- writing a response that is relevant to the issue(s) raised in the text.
Students should:
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- maintain appropriate register throughout the script
- write perceptively on the issue(s) addressed in the question
- demonstrate originality in the development and sequence of information and ideas
- demonstrate an excellent control of vocabulary and language structures suitable to the issue(s) discussed in the response
- adhere to the word and/or character limit of the question.
- respond to the issues raised in the text.
In better responses, students were able to:
- identify Indonesia’s potential and provide a good explanation of how the areas of potential can be used to improve Indonesia’s role in the world (Q6)
- demonstrate a wider understanding of the term ‘pop culture’ and how it inspires young Indonesians’ creativity (Q7)
- demonstrate originality in the development and sequence of information and ideas.
Areas for students to improve include having:
- a good understanding of the prescribed themes and issues
- an excellent control of vocabulary and appropriate language structures appropriate to the context of the question.
