Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Feedback on written examination
Part A
Students should:
- make notes in the Candidate’s Notes column and transcribe their answer on to the allocated lines
- respond in English
- use their own words and not translate segments of the text as part of their response
- refer to content and language if required by the question and give examples from the text to support their response
- address the key words in the question, for example ‘how’, ‘why’, ‘justify’, ‘analyse’ and provide relevant responses
- have a thorough knowledge of the prescribed themes and the related issues as well as the prescribed texts for study.
In better responses, students were able to:
- provide detailed and relevant answers that showed their understanding of the text
- provide responses that included reference to, and examples of, language as well as content, for example the counsellor’s use of idioms to assist Santi understand his advice kata-kata sering lebih tajam dari pisau and his use of the imperative to provide suggestions coba utarkan, jangan bimbang (Q1 c).
Areas for students to improve include:
- providing a comprehensive answer with all relevant details
- making links to language devices used (Q1 c).
Part B
Students should:
- respond in Indonesian as stipulated in the question
- use their own words and not translate segments of the text as part of their response
- demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the prescribed themes and the related issues raised in the texts
- support response with appropriate examples and textual references
- ensure their response provides all the relevant information to fully answer the question
- manipulate the language authentically according to the context, audience and purpose of the question
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- adhere to the suggested number of words and/or characters.
In better responses, students were able to:
- synthesise the content from the two texts
- write in the required text type (article) using appropriate register and a range of language features appropriate to an article
- use a range of sophisticated vocabulary and conjunctions, for example sedemikian rupa, bagaimanapun, seolah-olah
- coherently and succinctly structure their responses with close textual references.
Areas for students to improve include:
- taking detailed notes while listening closely to the two texts
- planning and structuring their responses to ensure coherency
- using a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures in their responses.
Part A
Students should:
- respond in either English or Indonesian as required by the question
- address all parts of the question
- identify the key issue(s) and provide examples to substantiate response when asked to analyse or evaluate information
- demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the prescribed texts, themes and prescribed issues
- use appropriate textual references to support their ideas and point(s) of view
- structure and sequence information and ideas in a coherent and logical manner
- have an excellent control of vocabulary and appropriate language structures
- avoid giving a literal translation of text(s) as part of the response
- use only the lines allocated for the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate their understanding of the prescribed text by providing a clear explanation and evidence from the extract and the whole text as required (Q3)
- identify and elaborate on the literary techniques and language devices used in the extract (Q3d)
- demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the prescribed texts by contrasting the father-son relationship in both texts (Q4)
- provide a coherent argument using sophisticated language (Q4)
- use appropriate examples or quotes from the texts to support their argument (Q4).
Areas for students to improve include:
- having detailed knowledge of the prescribed texts and the plot (Q3, Q4)
- providing appropriate quotes from the text to support answer (Q3, Q4)
- elaborating on language and literary techniques in their responses, for example, explaining the use of personification in regard to the tree – the leaves are depicted as her hair and fall out as a sign of her anger and grief (Q3d)
- using a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures in their responses.
Part B
Students should:
- respond in Indonesian only
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- take a stance on the issue(s) raised in the text and substantiate point of view with evidence from the text
- demonstrate understanding of whole text
- demonstrate an excellent control of vocabulary and appropriate language structures.
In better responses, students were able to:
- provide a variety of ideas and opinions in response to the questions raised in the text
- write a coherent and structured response using paragraphs and conjunctions to link their ideas and opinions
- use varied and sophisticated vocabulary to express their ideas and opinions.
Areas for students to improve include:
- planning and structuring their response
- using sophisticated language to ensure the clarity of their responses
- reading widely to be able to create responses beyond their own personal experiences.
Students should:
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- maintain appropriate register throughout the script
- write perceptively on the issue(s) addressed in the question
- demonstrate originality in the development and sequence of information and ideas
- demonstrate an excellent control of vocabulary and language structures suitable to the issue(s) discussed in the response
- adhere to the word and/or character limit of the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- write an appropriate introduction and conclusion suitable to a speech
- give relevant examples to persuade and engage the audience
- demonstrate a high level of accuracy with a variety of language structures and vocabulary.
Areas for students to improve include:
- reading widely to broaden their knowledge of contemporary issues
- using varied vocabulary and language structures in their responses
- employing appropriate language features and techniques for the text type.
