New and updated Stage 6 Mathematics Examination Materials

The new Stage 6 Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 courses will be examined for the first time for the HSC in 2020. NESA has prepared new HSC examination specifications to align with the new syllabus content and directions.

Examination specifications and sample examination materials for Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 are now available including:

• Assessment and Reporting in Stage 6 documents containing HSC examination specifications
• Sample examination materials including sample questions, marking guidelines, sample answers, mapping grid and reference sheet
• Performance band descriptions
• Consultation report on the examination specifications
• Examination advice. 

The new Stage 6 Mathematics Standard 1 and 2 courses will be examined for the first time for the HSC in 2019. Minor modifications to already published examination materials for Mathematics Standard have been made so that they are consistent with Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2.

• Mathematics Standard 1 and 2 examination specifications now advise that there will be:
  • common questions between the Mathematics Standard HSC examination papers from 2019 and between Mathematics Standard 2 and Mathematics Advanced HSC examinations from 2020
  • 10 minutes reading time (rather than 5 minutes) for Mathematics Standard 1 and 2 HSC examinations from 2019
• Sample examination materials now flag questions that are common to Mathematics Standard 2 and Mathematics Advanced
• HSC performance band descriptions for Mathematics Standard 1 and 2 have been revised to be consistent in style with those for Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2.
