If you are registered as a teacher in another Australian state or territory or New Zealand, you may be eligible for Mutual Recognition. Find out if you're eligible and how to apply.
Eligibility to apply for Mutual Recognition
If you have current Provisional or Full teacher registration from another Australian state or territory or New Zealand you may be eligible to transfer your registration into NSW.
This is governed by the Mutual Recognition Act 1992.
The NSW government’s Automatic Mutual Recognition of Occupational Registrations (AMR) scheme does not currently apply to teachers.

Evidence you need to apply for Mutual Recognition
- Proof of your current Provisional or Full teacher registration in another Australian state/territory or New Zealand
- A transcript from your university that shows all the subjects you’ve completed in your teaching degree, your marks, and credit points awarded
- The degree certificate (testamur) from your university that shows the date your teaching degree was awarded/conferred
- A valid NSW Working with Children Check Clearance for paid employment
- Three identity documents from the list of accepted IDs and a photo of yourself holding one form of photo ID.
Graduate entry/postgraduate applicants also need to provide:
- a final transcript of your undergraduate degree from your university that shows all the subjects you’ve completed in your degree, your marks, and credit points awarded AND
- degree certificate (testamur) of your undergraduate degree.
Transcript requirements
To be accepted, transcripts must clearly show:
- the name of your degree
- your name and student number
- all subjects you have completed in your degree, your marks, and credit points awarded.
The best way to share your qualifications with NESA
NESA accepts your digital credentials via the My eQuals secure online platform. To allow us to process your application more quickly, check if your university uses Parchment/My eQuals to share your qualifications directly with NESA (using the Organisation share option).
We do not accept:
- screenshots
- assessment results
- confirmation of enrolment documents
- letters of completion.
Applicants from Queensland or Western Australia also need to provide an authority to release information form
- Queensland College of Teachers authority to release information form (PDF 79.28KB)
- Teacher Registration Board of WA authority to release information form (PDF 60.52KB).
Applicants from New Zealand also need to provide:
- a passport and visa (or VEVO) if you are from New Zealand and currently residing in Australia
- a New Zealand birth certificate or New Zealand citizenship certificate if you are currently in New Zealand.
Apply for Mutual Recognition
If you have checked that you are eligible for Mutual Recognition and have gathered the required evidence, then you are ready to apply.
You can create an online account and start your application in NESA’s electronic Teacher Accreditation Management System (eTAMS) by clicking on the button below.
Once NESA has received your application with all required documentation, NESA will contact the teacher registration board in your state, territory, or New Zealand to verify your application. Each body has their own timeframe for responding to our verification requests.
Check the status of your application
You can check the status of your application in your NESA online eTAMS account.
If all your qualifications are from Australia and you’ve submitted all the relevant documents, you’ll receive an email response to your initial accreditation application within 10 business days.
If you don’t provide all the evidence required for your situation, the time to process your application will increase.
If you are granted Provisional accreditation in NSW through Mutual Recognition but have not completed an accredited teaching degree, you may need to do further study to meet the requirements for Proficient Teacher accreditation.
