Strata committee training
From 1 October 2026, NSW strata committee members must complete annual training. Learn how the training will support strata committee members and how to access it.
Strata committee training starts on 1 October 2026
From 1 October 2026, new and returning strata committee members must complete free online training delivered by NSW Fair Trading. This must be done within 3 months of being appointed to the committee.
If a committee member’s training is not done on time, they are automatically removed from the committee.
Strata committee members play important roles in managing their strata scheme. They make decisions that affect people’s homes, finances and daily lives.
The training will enable all strata committee members to:
- understand their legal duties and the strata committee’s governance role,
- feel more confident navigating key issues including managing repairs and maintenance and resolving disputes within their scheme, and
- better understand how to manage risks and help keep their scheme ‘financially healthy’.
Strata committee members must complete the training annually
Committee members appointed from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027 must complete the online training ‘Introduction to Strata Committee Rights and Responsibilities’ within 3 months of being appointed.
This applies whether they are:
- new to a committee,
- a returning committee member, or
- appointed to fill a vacancy of more than 3 months.
The training will be:
- free and self-paced and will take about 1 hour to complete
- available from Strata Hub – this webpage will be updated with a link once the training is launched.
Once committee members have completed this introductory training, they will have access to additional training each year. NSW Fair Trading will update this webpage with details of new training requirements in 2027.
- A committee member appointed on 1 October 2026 must do their training by 1 January 2027.
- A committee member appointed on 1 June 2027 must do their training by 1 September 2027.
- A committee member appointed before 1 October 2026 does not need to do training until they are next appointed, although they may choose to do it earlier.
Exemptions to committee training
Training requirements will not apply to committee members:
- in two-lot strata schemes
- who are members of the Australian College of Strata Lawyers
- who are strata managing agents
- filling a casual vacancy for less than 3 months.
If a committee member is exempt, they should provide evidence of their exemption to the committee secretary.
The training only applies to strata committees in strata schemes. It does not apply to association committees in community land schemes.
Anyone can do the training at any time
Once the training is launched, anyone can do the training including:
- people who are interested in joining their strata committee, and want to learn more about what is involved before nominating to join,
- strata residents and owners who do not plan on joining their committee but want to learn more about how strata works and who makes the decisions,
- committee members who were appointed before 1 October 2026 and are not required to complete the training, but still want to benefit from the practical skills and information the training provides,
- members of a two-lot scheme who would like to learn more about strata on a voluntary basis only.
Committee members must complete training to fulfill their roles
If a committee member does not complete the training within 3 months of being appointed, they automatically stop being a committee member.
The committee secretary may send a notice advising them that they have failed to complete the training and are no longer a committee member. Even if a notice is not sent, the committee member will still automatically cease to be a member.
If a committee member is appointed to the committee again during the same 12-month period they were first appointed, they will have 3 months from their new appointment date to do the training.
If a committee decision involves a committee member who did not do the training on time, the decision will generally be valid if the committee acted in good faith by not knowing that the person was no longer a committee member.
If a committee becomes aware that a member has failed to complete training, they should:
- take steps to prevent them taking part in future committee decisions, and
- check if they will need to appoint another owner to fill the vacancy.
If they do need to appoint a new committee member, this will require a general meeting of the owners corporation. For example, the minimum number of committee members needed for a large scheme of more than 100 lots is three members.
NSW Fair Trading will not take action against a committee member who fails to comply with their training requirements.
How to access strata committee training from 1 October
This webpage will be updated with steps on how to register and access the training from Strata Hub.
Tasks for the committee secretary
Strata committee secretaries play an important role in managing their schemes and communicating with owners.
To help committee members meet their obligations and be aware of consequences if training is not done, NSW Fair Trading recommends secretaries carry out certain tasks.
When a strata committee member completes the training, NSW Fair Trading issues them a Certificate of Completion.
It is recommended that each committee member give a copy of their Certificate of Completion to the committee secretary, within the training period, so that the committee knows they have completed training.
Committee secretaries are encouraged to keep copies of Certificates of Completion for at least 1 year for record-keeping purposes and to avoid uncertainty about who has completed training.
It is recommended that committee secretaries issue a reminder notice to each member of the strata committee. This should be done no later than 2 months after the member’s appointment.
The reminder notice should:
- advise the committee member of the date by which the committee member must complete their training, and
- ask them to provide a copy of their Certificate of Completion to the committee secretary.
NSW Fair Trading will publish a template of this reminder notice closer to the 1 October launch date for the training.
Committee secretaries are also encouraged to keep a copy of any reminder notices sent for at least 1 year for record-keeping purposes.
If a Certificate of Completion is not provided by a member by the training deadline, the committee secretary is encouraged to issue the committee member a Failure to Complete Training Notice as soon as practicable.
This notice will inform the committee member that they are no longer on the committee due to not completing training within the required 3 month period.
NSW Fair Trading will publish a template of this notice closer to the 1 October launch date for the training.
When a committee member's position becomes vacant, the committee secretary is encouraged to notify the remaining committee members as soon as practicable. This will support committee governance and help ensure only current committee members make decisions.
How strata communities will be informed about strata training
- We will email strata committee members who have their contact details on Strata Hub as part of strata reporting. Log in to Strata Hub to check your contact details are up to date or ask your strata manager (if you have one).
