Work to install lifts on Broughton Street in Kirribilli and on Cumberland Street in The Rocks has commenced and will take about eight months to complete.
Work to make the Sydney Harbour Bridge accessible and inclusive will involve:
- setting up site compounds
- removing part of the City of Sydney building at 7 Cumberland Street, The Rocks and landscaping the area
- building new platforms to connect the lifts to the existing walkway
- removing and relocating existing utilities
- removing and replacing 300 metres of asphalt and adjusting the stormwater system at the southern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge pedestrian walkway.
Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said the NSW Government has allocated $5 million to ensure that one of the world’s most iconic pieces of infrastructure is accessible.
“With more than 3000 pedestrians making their way across the bridge each day, the NSW Government is investing in improvements so that the bridge is open for everyone,” Mrs Pavey said.
“These new lifts are fantastic news for the thousands of pedestrians who cannot currently access this amazing bridge.
“The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia’s most well-known heritage structures and we have a design that is both functional and considerate of the heritage of this national icon.”
