The emergency pet card will provide a simple way of alerting someone when there are pets left at home in need of care.
On the card, owners will be able to write their pets’ details and the name of the person they nominate to care for their pets in the event of an emergency.
The law already allows pet owners to make arrangements for the ongoing care of their animal companions after unexpected life events.
Owners can make provision for pets in their Will, power of attorney and enduring guardianship documents. If something happens to a person while they are alive, their power of attorney and enduring guardianship documents can be used to give instructions about the care of their pet.
Attorney General Mark Speakman said providing your pets with future care can provide peace of mind.
“You can set up a trust of the maintenance of your pet or leave money to a loved one or charity, with a request to make sure your pet is looked after,” Mr Speakman said.
