The NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA) is not responsible for emergency response or managing emergencies. In NSW, emergency services lead the immediate response to disasters under the State Emergency Operations Controller.
The RA was created to help reduce the impacts of future disasters and to support communities to recover faster.
We work closely with communities, businesses and all levels of government to improve planning and preparedness, and to lessen how natural disasters affect people’s lives.
When a disaster happens, our staff work with emergency services and local leaders to understand what communities need to recover.
Once it is safe and the immediate danger has passed, we lead recovery efforts with community leaders and other recovery partners.
The Authority’s Chief Executive Officer also acts as the State Emergency Recovery Controller (SERCON) and oversees recovery work across government through the State Recovery Committee (SRC).
Natural Disaster Declarations
A disaster declaration identifies the Local Government Areas (LGAs) that have been impacted by a natural disaster. Once a disaster has been declared, affected communities can access a range of special assistance measures to support their recovery.
