Allied Health Rural Graduate Program (AHRGP)
Recruitment for the Western NSW LHD Allied Health Rural Graduate Program (AHRGP) starts in November of each year.
We are committed to growing our Allied Health workforce in a workplace where graduates and others are valued and can excel.
The AHRGP is a two-year structured and supportive program where graduates:
- Experience a positive transition to professional practice with access to workplace learning and supported clinical and professional skill development
- Collaborate and work within dynamic, highly professional multidisciplinary teams
- Rotate across clinical areas to gain experience in a broad range of services, including acute care, community services, specialty services, health promotion, and rural outreach
- Develop professional skills in key areas including early leadership and continuous quality improvement at interdisciplinary education days
- Build strong rural generalist clinical skills through workplace education, regular clinical supervision, and professional development opportunities
- Network with colleagues across disciplines and sites, and join a supportive graduate cohort
- Receive support for career development both within and beyond the program
Who should apply?
Allied health clinicians who have recently graduated or will graduate in 2023 in dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social work, or speech pathology, who are:
- Passionate about rural health and making a difference in rural communities
- Interested in gaining a broad range of clinical experience as a new graduate
- Keen to learn within a supported framework of professional learning, clinical supervision, and regular mentoring
- Eager to network and share experiences with other like-minded allied health new graduates on their learning journey
- Ambitious, with a sense of adventure in life and work
- Motivated to build capability and skills as a rural generalist clinician for future opportunities and career progression
- Attracted to living regionally and committed to completing the two-year program in the WNSWLHD
Program structure
The AHRGP is a 24-month full time program, commencing in February each year. Graduates undertake at least four clinical rotations during their two years to gain experience across a broad range of services and develop strong skills as a rural generalist clinician. Graduates also complete a quality improvement project in Year 2.
The AHRGP provides comprehensive graduate support to ensure a positive transition to practice and facilitate workplace learning. Graduates are supported by a preceptor, clinical supervision, mentoring, the AHRGP coordinator, and peer network.
In addition to discipline-specific professional development opportunities via workshops, in-services, and district days, AHRGP graduates undertake an interdisciplinary education program to develop a range of professional skills. Education days are facilitated by experts in their fields and include early leadership, quality improvement, and WNSWLHD priorities and initiatives.
The AHRGP is committed to supporting graduates’ career development both within and beyond the program. Graduates are given the opportunity to explore clinical areas of interest, learn about allied health career pathways, and receive mentoring.
We are able to arrange up to six weeks of supported accommodation if you are relocating for the position.
A three-day face-to-face AHRGP orientation is held at the commencement of the program, followed by a local orientation to the facility. This is an opportunity to meet allied health graduates across the district, and start the program with confidence.
There are a minimum of four formal AHRGP study days during the year. These are in addition to opportunities for facility in-services, discipline area days, and other professional development opportunities such as workshops/conferences.
You will undertake at least four rotations into different clinical and service areas. In Year 1, rotations will focus on building your core clinical skills. In Year 2, there is opportunity to explore different service areas, including specialist areas. Outreach to rural communities may be included in your rotations.
Rotation opportunities:
- Acute/Inpatient
- Rehabilitation
- Outpatients
- Paediatrics
- Community health
- Mental health
- Virtual services
- Health promotion
- Specialty services
NB: Rotation options subject to service capacity, priorities, and availability.

Georgia Knowles, Occupational Therapist - understanding NSW Health & networking
“Being a part of the AHRGP and attending the workshops has allowed me to increase my knowledge and understanding of NSW Health as an organisation, and has provided me with a range of networking opportunities. The workshops have also played a crucial role in increasing my cultural competency, patient safety, and reminded me of the importance of self-care as an early career therapist. “
“The AHRGP has given me the opportunity to work across a broad range of services and pursue areas of occupational therapy that I am passionate about. It has provided me with amazing clinical support from my supervisor, preceptor, and other colleagues at different sites. AHRGP is a well-supported program with fantastic learning opportunities.”
Georgia was also awarded the Western NSW LHD Allied Health Awards Early Career Allied Health Professional of the Year in 2023.
"I have found that being a part of the new grad program as a physiotherapist is an excellent way to get exposure to a variety of clinical areas and really discover which areas of practice spark your passion. It has been a lovely opportunity to connect with other new grads from all over the district to share experiences and learnings at regular catch up days.”
“Having experienced a student clinical placement in Forbes, I knew of the incredible scope and variety unique to WNSWLHD. The decision to return as a clinician stemmed from a curiosity to ‘try a bit of everything’, and build foundational generalist knowledge and skills to equip me further in my career journey. It has been a challenging, though wholly rewarding experience with immense professional and personal learnings.”
“I have really enjoyed the program as I’ve felt supported in both my clinical and professional development. It’s been great to know that the Western NSW LHD really values new graduates and developing our skills. I’ve worked with amazing dietitians in a variety of clinical areas. It’s a great opportunity for new graduates to get a wide variety of clinical experience. We’ve attended professional workshops to enable us to have a positive impact on our workplace and help us progress our career goals.”
"When I completed my studies, I was unsure whether I wanted to pursue practice with paediatric or adult populations. Thanks to this program, I have had the opportunity to strengthen foundational skills in both community health and the hospital, which has been invaluable and incredibly fulfilling to develop the capability to service a range of people who may not be able to access interventions as readily as in metropolitan areas. If new grads are willing and able to relocate, I absolutely cannot recommend it highly enough because it’s the adventure of a lifetime.”
