About the data
Every year NESA receives a small number of reports on HSC students breaching the rules of HSC exams or school-based HSC assessments.
HSC Exam breaches

In 2020, the following HSC Exam breaches were penalised by the Examination Rules Committee:
- 258 cases of non-serious attempts
- 95 projects for non-certification
- 27 students with 32 offences for the breach of exam rules or malpractice.
In 2021, the following HSC Exam breaches were penalised by the Examination Rules Committee:
- 150 cases of non-serious attempts
- 41 students with 45 offences for the breach of exam rules or malpractice
- 32 projects for non-certification.*
*There was a drop in numbers from previous years as the majority of projects and performances were not submitted to NESA and marked at school.
In 2022, the following HSC Exam breaches were penalised by the Examination Rules Committee:
- 100 cases of non-serious attempts
- 57 projects for non-certification
- 64 students with 65 offences for the breach of exam rules or malpractice.
In 2023, the following HSC Exam breaches were penalised by the Examination Rules Committee:
- 83 cases of non-serious attempts
- 61 projects for non-certification
- 47 students with 50 offences for the breach of exam rules or malpractice.
In 2024, the following HSC Exam breaches were penalised by the Examination Rules Committee:
- 108 cases of non-serious attempts
- 66 projects for non-certification
- 64 students with 68 offences for the breach of exam rules or malpractice.
