NSW basemaps

Types of maps

Basemaps give you a foundational map layer which you can then add your own data to. We provide basemaps in vector format.

Vector maps

Vector format basemaps are compatible within a variety of GIS web applications, which offer high precision mapping and analysis. Each vector basemap has its own unique way of visualising data, making map data clearer and easier to customise.

Access basemaps through the Spatial Collaboration Portal

Vector data stores basic geometries. There are:

• Points: single vertex, for example, a house.
• Lines: 2 or more vertices where the first and last vertex are not equal, for example, a road.
• Polygons: 3 or more vertices with the last vertex equal to the first, for example, a boundary.

Vector tiles are compact, work better across platforms and have high-resolution display at various scales.
