The 16 Days of Activism starts on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November) and runs until Human Rights Day (10 December).
On Friday November 24, the FWLHD Violence Abuse and Neglect Service (VANS), in partnership with other local services, will hold a community event in the Broken Hill Town Square from 6pm until 8pm.
The event will start with a Welcome to Country and presentations from guest speakers who will discuss their lived experience of gender-based violence. A free barbecue will also be held.
Far West Local Health District’s VANS Manager Rebecca Deer said, on average, every 10 days a woman in Australia is killed by a man they know.
“I want to encourage the Broken Hill community to take part in the community event which we hope will help raise awareness about support services available,” Ms Deer said.
"Gender-based violence against women and girls includes harassment, sexual harassment, discrimination, coercive control, physical violence, sexual violence, verbal abuse, psychological and emotional abuse, economic abuse, and spiritual abuse.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe, equal, and respected. Services that can assist victims and survivors of domestic and family violence will be present at the event.
“A table of honour will also be on display to honour those who have supported victims and survivors of domestic and family violence.”
