Develop your practice
Steps to develop your practice
Follow the steps on this page to understand how to develop your practice when working towards achieving Proficient Teacher accreditation.
Engage in professional activities
To develop your teaching practice, you need to engage in a range of professional activities across the 3 domains of teaching, including:
- planning and evaluating your own lessons
- assessing student or child progress
- engaging with parents and carers
- reflecting on your practice
- seeking guidance and feedback from colleagues.
Collect documentary evidence
Collect documentary evidence of your teaching practice using the Proficient Teacher Evidence Guide (PDF 605.99KB).
Your documentary evidence should be produced over time as a natural outcome of teaching. It should not be created for the specific purpose of accreditation.
It does not need to demonstrate all 37 Standard Descriptors, but it must collectively address at least one Standard Descriptor from each of the 7 Proficient Teacher Standards.
During the time you collect documentary evidence you should:
- engage in ongoing discussions with your Accreditation Supervisor
- engage in professional activities
- reflect on your practice to:
- select 5 to 8 pieces of evidence from your collection, noting a piece of evidence may include more than 1 item
- link 2 to 4 Standard Descriptors to each piece of documentary evidence in your NESA online account (eTAMS)
- ensure you have linked at least 1 Standard Descriptor from each of the Standards to your evidence.
For further information and examples of documentary evidence read our Effective documentary evidence page.
If you are including documentary evidence from more than one school or service, you can have a Proficient Teacher authenticate your evidence in their eTAMs account.
Annotate your 5 to 8 items of evidence
Annotations explain how and why your selected documentary evidence demonstrates your practice and meets particular Standard Descriptors.
Use your eTAMS account to write annotations for your selected pieces of documentary evidence.
To write your annotations you need to:
- identify the 2 to 4 Standard Descriptors that the documentary evidence demonstrates
- outline the context for the evidence (the what, who, when, why, how)
- clearly explain how you used the documentary evidence to demonstrate the:
- practice identified in the selected Standard Descriptors
- impact of your practice on child/student learning, relevant to the selected Standard Descriptors.
Get your practice observed
Organise an observation of your teaching practice with your Accreditation Supervisor.
The observation needs to include 3 phases:
- planning
- observing
- reflecting.
Where it is not possible for your Accreditation Supervisor to conduct the observation in person, you may arrange a virtual or recorded observation.
Upload the observation report to eTAMS
Upload your Accreditation Supervisor’s observation report to your eTAMS account.
Act on any feedback from your Accreditation Supervisor.
Issues that may affect your application
Learn more about issues that may affect your application:
If your Accreditation Supervisor tells you there is an issue with your practice, talk to them about the Standard Descriptors you have not yet met, and how you can further develop your practice to meet them.
If your Accreditation Supervisor thinks the issues may impact the accreditation recommendation from your principal/TA Delegate, they will write to you. They will also notify your principal/TA Delegate within 28 days of becoming aware of the issues.
If you change schools or services before your current principal/TA Delegate gives a recommendation, your new principal/TA Delegate can reach out to your former one for input, with your permission.
For early childhood teachers who have moved services and no longer have access to a TA Delegate contact NESA at ECTaccreditation@nesa.nsw.edu.au
