Program objective
Gone Fishing Day is run each year in October and aims to promote and celebrate fishing as a fun, healthy, outdoors activity for the whole family and your friends.
This program is funded and administered by Department of Primary Industries.
Eligibility
All clubs, organisations and community groups must be incorporated in Australia.
Who can apply
Incorporated organisations including fishing clubs and organisations related to recreational fishing.
Who can’t apply
Individuals or groups of individuals.
Unincorporated organisations.
Types of projects funded under this grant
Applicants can apply for grants to purchase items such as fishing gear, bait, food and non-alcoholic drinks, equipment hire, etc. to run a local Gone Fishing Day event and associated activities, such as:
casting and fishing workshops
fishing information sessions
fish habitat restoration activities such as replanting and/or weeding creek banks
What can’t you apply for
- Gone Fishing Day should not be on private land or land with no public access (where relevant). Activities must be as accessible as possible.
- Project activities should not include commercial ventures or materials developed for a primarily commercial purpose.
- Project activities should not include running the business of organisations/clubs.

Address the eligibility criteria
- Organisations must be incorporated.
- Only one application for funding will be accepted per organisation per project.
- Applications must be completed in full, including the budget section (with sufficient detail to enable a sound assessment).
- The activities should be scheduled to occur on or within 4 weeks of Gone Fishing Day.
Address the assessment criteria
- Gone Fishing Day project activities must relate to the promotion of recreational fishing or fish habitat restoration and the overall objective of the Gone Fishing Day Grants program.
- Projects must have an accurate, cost effective budget which shows value for money. Contributing funding or ‘in-kind’ contribution by the applicant and other project partners should be included in the budget, where relevant. Example expense items could include purchase of fishing gear, bait, food and non-alcoholic drinks, equipment hire, etc. to run a local Gone Fishing Day event or fish habitat restoration related expense items.
- The adequacy of expertise within the project team.
