Just a few kilometres west of the scientific wonder of the Australia Telescope lies an unexplained natural marvel — Yarrie Lake. This three-kilometre, saucer-shaped expanse of water on the edge of the Pilliga Forest is believed to have formed thousands of years ago by a falling meteor. A haven for bird watchers, Yarrie Lake is home to more than 70 bird species. Its sheltered position provides an ideal breeding ground, making it a delight for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike — especially at sunset, when the sky reflects brilliantly across the water. Travellers seeking peace and quiet will love the lake's tranquil isolation, while powered sites, hot showers, toilets and laundry facilities offer a welcome touch of comfort. Shelters, tables and chairs, camp oven pits and barbecues are also available for campers to enjoy. Whether you're setting up a tent, parking the caravan or rolling in with a motorhome, Yarrie Lake offers both powered and unpowered sites, just one kilometre off the sealed road from Narrabri. For more information, contact the friendly on-site caretaker. Water sports and yabbying are popular pastimes, but please note a permit is required to launch boats. No dogs or cats are permitted. Noise restrictions apply — please turn off generators and keep noise to a minimum during these hours.
