Registration concessions and automatic renewal for pensioners
If you're an eligible pensioner, you may be exempt from some registration costs. Find out if you're eligible and how it works.
Eligibility
You're eligible for pensioner benefits if you're a NSW resident with a:
- current Pensioner Concession Card (PCC), issued by Services Australia (Centrelink) or the Department of Veterans' Affairs showing a NSW address
- Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card endorsed TPI (Totally and Permanently Incapacitated)
- Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card endorsed EDA (Extreme Disablement Adjustment)
- Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card endorsed War Widow.
- statement from the Department of Veterans' Affairs stating that you:
- receive Disability Compensation Payment of 70% or higher
- receive an Intermediate or Extreme Disablement Adjustment pension, or
- have been assessed under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004, at 50 or more impairment points.
We check your eligibility for concessions electronically. If your eligibility cannot be confirmed, you'll be sent a letter advising you to attend a service centre or call 13 22 13 to resolve the problem.
If you are not eligible, you'll be sent a renewal notice for the full private rate of registration.
Concessions and benefits
Eligible pensioners do not have to pay:
- registration fees, including HVIS inspection fees
- motor vehicle tax
- conditional registration fees
- transfer fee and stamp duty – for Department of Veterans' Affairs pensioners only who:
- Disability Compensation Payment of 70% or higher
- receive an Intermediate, Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI) or Extreme Disablement Adjustment (EDA) pension, or
- have been assessed under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 at 50 or more impairment points.
The pensioner concession applies to 1 vehicle per eligible customer. If you have more than 1 vehicle, you must nominate the vehicle you want to receive registration concessions.
Automatic pensioner registration renewal
Automatic pensioner registration renewal lets you skip the queue at renewal time. You won't need to visit a service centre, renew online or call us to process your registration.
You still need to buy compulsory third party (CTP) insurance and get a safety check for your vehicle when it's due (usually once a year). If no safety check is required, we use the first insurance policy we receive from you.
Automatic registration renewal can only be used on 1 vehicle per pension cardholder.
If your pensioner registration renewal notice shows zero cost and you have no restrictions on your vehicle or driver licence, we automatically renew your registration when we receive your:
- vehicle eSafety check
- CTP insurance policy.
If you have an online account with us, we'll send you an email or text message once your registration is renewed.
If you change to a pensioner registration within 6 weeks of your current registration's expiry date, it will not automatically renew. You need to visit a service centre in person to renew. After this, your registration will renew automatically each year.
Note: Automatic registration renewal is not available if a vehicle:
- has special number plates with fees payable
- is conditionally registered.

Cancelling automatic renewal
To opt out of the automatic renewal, contact us before getting your next safety inspection report and CTP insurance renewal. Once you opt out, you need to visit a service centre in person to renew your registration.
