Technical specifications for buses

Find out the safety specifications for public and school buses including the requirements for doors, seats, padding, internal partitions, handrails, warning signs and lighting systems.

Doors, field of view and padding

Extra safety features such as padding on hard surfaces or bus door safety systems help protect passengers when exiting a bus and in the event of a collision.

Door safety features are required for applicable buses over 12 seats (including the driver), see the applicability table (PDF, 78.77 KB) for more details.

Warning signs and lights

Warning signs and lighting systems, also known as wig wag lights, are now required for each bus that:

  • seats more than 12 people including the driver
  • transports children to and from school.

A bus first registered on or after 8 February 2019 must be equipped with warning signs and lighting systems meeting TS 150. A bus registered before then may alternatively meet TS 142.
