We provide care for both inpatients (people staying in hospital) and outpatients (people visiting for treatment).
We also help train future pharmacists and contribute to research through partnerships with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the University of Sydney (USYD).

Our clinical pharmacists work closely with healthcare teams to ensure medicines are used safely and effectively. Our services include:

We offer expert advice and support to promote safe and appropriate medication use. We also work closely with patients to review and manage medicines and provide medication counselling and guidance to support safe transitions from hospital to home.

- Discharge medication supply to ensure continuity of care post-discharge.
- Coordination with clinical pharmacists and other clinicians to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant medication supply.
All dispensing activities are undertaken in line with NSQHS Medication Safety Standard 4 and NSW Health policy directives.

The cancer services pharmacy supports patients receiving cancer and blood disorder treatments at Blacktown Hospital.
Our pharmacists prepare, verify, and dispense chemotherapy and immunotherapy medicines, review treatment plans, and provide education to patients and families.
We work closely with oncology, haematology, and palliative care teams and support clinical trials.

Oncology clinical trials
Our oncology clinical trials pharmacy manages investigational medicines for patients enrolled in cancer research studies.
We oversee storage, preparation, dispensing, and accountability of study drugs to ensure compliance with research and safety standards. The team supports trials from early Phase I to Phase IV.

Our Department of Pharmacy provides comprehensive clinical and non-clinical pharmacy services to both inpatients and outpatients across Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals.

Westmead Hospital provides sterile and non-sterile compounding to meet individual patient needs.
Our trained staff ensure all medicines are prepared safely and meet high-quality standards for both inpatients and outpatients.
When compounding is used
We compound (custom-make) medicines when:
- commercial products are unavailable
- a patient needs a different form of a medicine (for example, due to allergies or swallowing difficulties)
- medicines are needed for approved clinical trials.
Aseptic compounding
Sterile medicines such as intravenous (IV) drugs are prepared in clean environments that meet strict national safety standards to prevent contamination.
PC2 Production Suite
Advanced treatments, including gene and immune therapies, are prepared in a secure laboratory that meets national cleanroom and safety requirements.
The Medicines Information Centre is staffed by expert pharmacists who provide evidence-based advice about medicines.
